Before there was a League of Women Voters, our founding mothers were members of the organization NATIONAL AMERICAN WOMEN SUFFRAGE ASSOCIATION. On February 14, 1920, six months before the 19th amendment to the Constitution was ratified, the NAWSA evolved into the LWV. Beginning with seeking the right to vote for women, the LWV went on to seek voting rights for all Americans.
Since that first success, the League went on endorsing not only women’s issues, but also citizen education aimed at all of the electorate. The first National victory was the 1921 passage of Sheppard-Towner Act providing federal aid for maternal and child care programs. The League sponsored "Meet the Candidates," the first national radio broadcast of a candidate forum, in 1928. Members worked successfully for enactment of the Social Security and Food and Drug Acts. During the postwar period, the League helped lead the effort to establish the United Nations.
From the beginning, League members have been instrumental in going to small towns in the U.S., providing reading material and instruction on the issues related to government and civics. Perhaps you’ve seen an example of one of their pamphlets or a set of VOTE Postage Stamps dedicated to the cause in a library exhibit. We’re still working to inform the public about the election process, voting, knowledge of the candidates and issues that affect generations to come.
Back then…..
And, now…….
